Zaandam is located near de Zaan (a canal) in Noord-Holland. It is only 15 minutes from Amsterdam and only 20 minutes from Schiphol Airport. In Total 146.937 people live there and there are about 63.950 homes (figures as at 01/01/2011).
Because of its versatility, its rich history, major industries, the central location and the many cultural and recreational opportunities it is very attractive to live and work in the city of Zaanstad.
The Zaanstad municipality consists of the following cities: Koog aan de Zaan, Zaandam, Krommenie, Westzaan, Assendelft, Wormerveer and Zaandijk.
Culture and Recreation
In the municipality of Zaandam is a wide range of culture and recreation. Because of the water-rich environment Zaandam is an ideal place and has many routes for boating and skating in the winter if possible. There are also miles of trails for cycling and walking in the beautiful nature.
There are many sports available such as riding schools, swimming pools, tennis courts, gyms and many football clubs.
Zaandam has a wealth of industrial heritage. The most famous is ‘de Zaanse Schans'. This is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the Netherlands. Each year about 1 million people visit de Zaanse Schans. Which is especially famous for its many mills, the clog and the first Albert Heijn store.
On the Dam square in Zaandam is the entertainment district with many bars, restaurants and terraces. It is also possible to pay a visit to the cinema (Pathé Zaandam) or movie house ‘de Fabriek'. You can also view a nice performance at the ‘Zaantheater'.
Every year there are many great events in Zaandam. Such as the Midsummer Zaan Festival, the Dam to Dam walk, Singing on the Zaan and the Children's book market.
The main shopping area is located in Zaandam. Currently the city is radically redesigned and improved. They will bring back the original canal on the ‘Gedempte gracht' and there will be a complete metamorphosis of the center. There are also a number of buildings constructed which include the Pathe Theatre (cinema), the renovated Hotel Inntel and many new apartment complexes.
Economy, businesses and multinationals
Zaanstreek mainly consists of industry. Large known companies are ADM Cacoa, Albert Heijn, Verkade, Duyvis, Tate & Lyle, Croc Laan and Karlshamms.
